Our work begins with the cedar itself. We source Western red cedar logs here in Washington and mill them ourselves, giving us direct control over the grade, dimensions, and finish of every board. This allows us to select and cut the material for your fence instead of designing around standard stock sizes.

Western red cedar is very well suited to Northwest conditions. Its natural oils help resist decay and insects, while its grain takes stain beautifully. Left unfinished, it gradually develops the soft silver-grey color commonly seen throughout the region. With the quality materials and proper installation we offer, a cedar fence can easily last for decades.

Why Choose A Cedar Fence?

A long-lasting cedar fence starts with how the posts are installed.

Standard installations place wood directly into soil or concrete. Our post-on-pipe system keeps cedar above the ground, eliminating post rot and extending the life of the fence.

Built To Last Decades

Staining is optional. It can help preserve the cedar’s natural color and protect it from weathering, UV exposure, and moisture.

If you prefer the look of naturally weathered cedar as it silvers over time, the fence can be left untreated. Stained fences should generally be re-stained every two to three years.

Fence Staining

Our Post-on-Pipe System

We use post-on-pipe on almost every cedar fence we build.

We bore a 1 5/8-inch hole 11 inches into the cedar post and secure a galvanized pipe inside. The pipe goes into the ground while the cedar stays above it.

Ground, Concrete, or Retaining Walls

The same system works where a fence meets concrete or a retaining wall. We weld steel to the base and bolt it securely into place, keeping the cedar above the surface.

When Pressure-Treated Makes Sense

Cedar posts can crack or split under heavy wind, particularly on fences taller than six feet. When pressure-treated posts are the better option, we use a 4 1/8-inch jumbo post instead of the standard 3 1/2-inch size. The larger post is less prone to warping.

Planned for Your Property

During the site visit, we review the yard, fence height, and any concrete or retaining walls involved. We then confirm the post system and provide a straightforward quote before construction begins.

You are not only paying for the cedar you can see. You are paying for the structure that keeps it straight.

Wood naturally expands and contracts, which can make a standard door lock difficult to use on an all-wood gate. A padlock also limits access to one side.

For better security and operation, we can fabricate a custom steel gate with steel posts, welded hinges, and a door lock. Cedar can be picture-framed over the steel so the gate matches the fence

How Cedar Grades Work

Clear Cedar

Free from knots and defects, with uniform color and smooth grain. This is the highest quality and most expensive grade we offer.

#1 Cedar

No more than three knots over two inches, with no wane, black rings, or cracks. A strong choice for visible sections where appearance matters.

#2 & Better Cedar

Tight knots, one black ring allowed on one side, minimal wane, knots no larger than 2.5 inches, and no cracks. A practical balance of quality and cost.

#2 Standard

May include black-ring knots, unrestricted knot sizes, cracks, worm holes, machine damage, or wane. The boards remain structurally sound.

Fence Board Options

Three things decide what a board is: its size, its grade, and how it behaves once it is up.

SIZE

- Thickness

5/8 inch, standard on every fence board.

- Widths

Full 4-inch or 6-inch boards.

- Standard + Custom Boards

We stock lengths of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 feet in a variety of grades.

If the standard sizes do not fit your design, we are happy to mill custom boards for your project.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE WOOD

- Natural Cedar Character

Rough-cut boards keep the grain and texture visible, giving the fence a natural, handcrafted finish.

- Green, not kiln dried

Our boards are installed green, not kiln-dried. They retain their natural moisture at installation and shrink slightly as they dry.
