How It Started
Isaac Hutchins started Knocking Wood in 2020, taking on residential repairs and custom outdoor projects. One fence led to another. Homeowners saw work Isaac had built for their neighbors and called him for projects of their own.
Today, Isaac runs the company with a crew building fences, gates, decks, patios and the occasional project that does not fit neatly into a category.
The company has grown, but Isaac is still involved in the day-to-day work. The goal is the same as it was at the beginning: understand the property, tell the homeowner what the job actually needs and build it properly.
We Mill Our Cedar
We do something most fence contractors never touch. We source western red cedar logs in Washington and mill them ourselves at a Washington sawmill.
That gives us control over the grade, width and thickness of the boards. When a project needs a dimension the lumberyard does not carry, we can cut it instead of redesigning the fence around stock material.
It also means we know where the cedar came from and what grade is going into the job because we handled it before it ever reached the property.
OUR CEDAR
What the Northwest Teaches You
Around here, rain always finds the weak spot.
Fence posts rot where the wood meets wet ground. Gates sag when the frame, post or hardware is not built for the weight. Deck problems usually begin in the framing underneath the boards.
We build around those failure points. Our post-on-pipe system keeps cedar fence posts above the soil. Gates are framed and hung for their actual size and weight. Decks are planned from the footings up, with close attention paid to drainage and the connections underneath.
